Why Checking Your Iron Level Is so Crucial for Optimal Health

 

  • Iron overload is incredibly common with one in three people reading this, and likely as dangerous to your health as vitamin D deficiency, as it creates excessive free radicals that damage your mitochondrial DNA, cell membranes and electron transport proteins
  • Iron overload is easily diagnosed by measuring your serum ferritin. Lab normal levels are correct and should be between 20 and 80 ng/ml; between 40 and 60 ng/ml is the sweet spot
  • Iron overload is easy and inexpensive to treat. Most adult men and non-menstruating women would benefit by donating blood two to three times per year to keep their mitochondria healthy

Simple Healthy Taco Salad Recipe

Yields: 4 servings | Serving Size: About 3 1/2 cups | Calories: 395 | Total Fat: 25g | Saturated Fat: 9g | Trans Fat: 0g | Cholesterol: 113mg | Sodium: 924mg | Carbohydrates: 14g | Fiber: 6g | Sugar: 5g | Protein: 31g |

 

Ingredients

 

1 pound lean ground turkey, optional beef

2 1/2 to 3 tablespoons taco seasoning, homemade or store bought

2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes

1 cup grated reduced fat cheddar,

6 cups shredded or thinly sliced lettuce

1 cup guacamole, homemade or store bought

1/2 cup salsa or enchilada sauce, homemade or store bought

 

Directions

 

Cook meat in a skillet over medium heat until browned, for about 8 minutes, stirring frequently.

 

Drain any fat and add taco seasoning, and 1/3 cup water. Cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

 

Arrange 4 plates and top with an even amount of tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, guacamole, and salsa. If desired, add a dollop of Greek yogurt or sour cream.

The next time you sit down for a meal, do not start with salad, soup or bread.  Dig right in to the main protein!  A new study from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York found that the blood sugar level of folks who follow this advice is 40% lower after a meal, enough to significantly reduce the odds of diabetes and to avoid “rebound hunger”.

 

Because protein takes longer to digest than carbs, even the healthy carbs in fruits and vegetables, it slows the rate at which your body breaks down other foods. And that, in turn, leads to a slower, steadier release of blood sugar.

In a recent study, the blood sugar of prediabetes, women who watched funny TV shows with amusing characters, such as Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory, daily plunge 37%, no meds needed.  Hearty laughing uses blood sugar the same way exercise does, it also may reduce stress hormones that can keep blood sugar high.
