HWA-DOES COVID-19 TRIGGER DIABETES

DOES COVID-19 TRIGGER DIABETES

Early in the coronavirus pandemic, doctors learned that people with diabetes face a greater risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19 infections.

News Picture: Does COVID-19 Trigger New Cases of Diabetes? What they didn’t immediately realize is that the new coronavirus might trigger diabetes in people who didn’t have the blood sugar disease before.

To get a better idea of exactly how COVID-19 and diabetes interact, an international group of 17 leading diabetes experts just announced they’ll be collecting data through a new global registry called the CoviDiab Registry.

“The evidence so far is clear that there is an interplay between diabetes and COVID-19. The link is bi-directional as diabetes is associated with severe COVID-19 manifestations and, conversely, COVID-19 is associated with severe manifestations of preexisting diabetes,” said the lead author of the letter, Dr. Francesco Rubino. He is a professor of metabolic and bariatric surgery at King’s College London in the United Kingdom.

“Because of the preliminary nature of these observations, we have launched the international registry to quickly gather more evidence and confirm or dispel the concerns that the virus may indeed induce diabetes,” he explained.

Rubino said it’s not yet clear how COVID-19 might trigger diabetes. He said there are known stress responses that can make preexisting diabetes worse or unmask already existing diabetes. Some of the treatments used for COVID-19 are known to increase blood sugar levels, so that could play a role, too.

Past research also showed that the coronavirus responsible for SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) seemed to trigger an acute type of diabetes. That virus also directly damaged the pancreas (the major organ involved in diabetes).

Sanjoy Dutta, vice president of research for JDRF (formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), agreed that there are a number of potential ways that COVID-19 might lead to diabetes.

“The idea of a viral trigger has been associated with type 1 diabetes, but is definitely not proven. There are so many viruses and so many viral infections and, fortunately, the number of people with type 1 diabetes is much, much lower,” he said.

Dutta explained that there are other pathways in the body that can create an imbalance of blood sugar that could trigger acute diabetes. He said this type of diabetes might go away if blood sugar levels were controlled, but it’s still unknown.

While the registry is collecting data and getting a better understanding of how the two conditions affect each other, there are some helpful things people can do.

If you already have diabetes:

“Having diabetes clearly increases the risk of experiencing more severe COVID-19 [infections], as well as complications from diabetes itself,” Rubino said. That means avoiding infection is even more important for people with diabetes. Rubino said people with diabetes need to be extra cautious and follow public health advice — such as hand-washing, social distancing and wearing a mask — to mitigate risk of catching an infection.

People with diabetes should keep a closer eye on their blood sugar levels. If blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, contact your doctor. Your diabetes care might need to be adjusted. Additionally, regularly checking your blood sugar can help you avoid serious diabetes complications if you develop a COVID-19 infection and don’t realize it.

If you have pre-diabetes or a high risk of diabetes:

If you’ve been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or you’re at high risk of developing diabetes due to conditions such as obesity, taking steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle may be more important than ever to help prevent diabetes. Following public health guidelines to try to avoid infection is important for people with pre-diabetes and a high risk of diabetes, too.

If you have COVID-19, but don’t have diabetes:

If you’ve been diagnosed with COVID-19, but don’t have diabetes, be wary of the sudden onset of symptoms that could indicate diabetes. These include being very thirsty, needing to urinate more than usual, feeling very tired, having blurry vision or feeling confused. These symptoms could signal complications of diabetes that require urgent medical attention, Rubino said.

Dutta said if you know you have a family history of diabetes, especially type 1 diabetes, it’s a good idea to let your doctor know because you have a higher risk of developing diabetes.

A potentially lasting risk?

For those who develop diabetes during a COVID-19 infection and then get better, Rubino said doctors don’t yet know if the risk of diabetes will return to normal, or if it will remain higher for an extended period.

Until we know more, it is prudent to assume that patients who have had diabetes during the course of COVID-19 could be at increased risk of diabetes later on even if diabetes resolves after the infection,” he explained.

Rubino said doctors should monitor anyone who got diabetes during a COVID-19 infection over time to see what happens to their blood sugar levels. He added that the global registry is accessible by any physician around the world, and he encourages doctors to share their findings to increase understanding of the COVID-19/diabetes relationship.

HWA-SPEECH ALONE CAN SPREAD COVID 19

SPEECH ALONE CAN SPREAD COVID 19

Small respiratory droplets produced while talking can hang in the air for at least eight minutes and perhaps even longer, researchers report.

The finding could explain why new coronavirus infections are more common in nursing homes, cruise ships and other confined locations with limited ventilation, the Washington Post reported.

As reported previously, always make sure that staff in a Nursing home are wearing masks, not necessarily needed by patients.  Also Staff must change into their scrubs or work clothes at the institution they are working at, not dressing from home and coming to work in their scrubs.  Covid adhere to clothing.

Is Surgical Intervention Best Option for Elderly Female Nursing ...

The researchers used laser light to assess levels of small respiratory droplets that leave people’s mouths when they speak. The study was published May 13 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“Highly sensitive laser light scattering observations have revealed that loud speech can emit thousands of oral fluid droplets per second,” the researchers at the U.S. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the University of Pennsylvania wrote.

It’s been suspected that small droplets can spread the new coronavirus, but there are conflicting opinions among experts. There is widespread agreement that the virus is typically spread through large respiratory droplets, the Post reported.

This new study did not involve the coronavirus or any other virus, but instead just looked at how people generate respiratory droplets when they talk, the Post reported.

The experiment focused on small droplets that can linger in the air much longer. These droplets could contain enough virus particles to infect someone, the authors said, the Post reported.

Louder speech produces even more droplets, the scientists added. Just one minute of “loud speaking” could generate almost 1,000 virus-containing droplets that stay in the air for more than eight minutes.

“This study is the most accurate measure of the size, number and frequency of droplets that leave the mouth during a normal conversation and shower any listeners within range,” Benjamin Neuman, a virologist at Texas A&M University-Texarkana, told the Post.

The research “doesn’t directly test whether the virus can be transmitted by talking, but it builds a strong circumstantial case that droplets produced in a normal close conversation would be large enough and frequent enough to create a high risk of spreading SARS-CoV-2 or any other respiratory virus between people who are not wearing face masks,” Neuman told the newspaper.

Andrew Noymer, a University of California at Irvine epidemiologist, told the Post that, “speech creates droplets that breathing alone does not. That much is clear. Big mouths of the world, beware. You’re putting the rest of us at risk.”

HWA-IS CORONAVIRUS SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED

IS CORONAVIRUS SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED

Traces of the COVID-19 coronavirus have been found in the semen of some severely infected men, raising the possibility that the virus might be sexually transmitted, a new study from China claims.

Researchers found evidence of the virus in six men out of a group of 38 COVID-19 patients at Shangqiu Municipal Hospital in China who provided samples.

The six men included four who were still infected and two who were recovering, the researchers said.

The study was led by Dr. Weiguo Zhao of the People’s Liberation Army General Hospital in Beijing, and findings were published May 7 in the journal JAMA Network Open.

It’s not surprising that the virus was found in semen samples, since it’s also been found in stool and other body fluids, said Dr. Ryan Berglund, a urologist with the Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute.

Infectious viruses commonly are found in semen, with Zika being one recent notable example. The Chinese researchers noted that 27 different viruses have been detected in human semen.

However, Berglund and infectious disease experts warn that this does not constitute concrete evidence that COVID-19 can be sexually transmitted.

“I think that’s premature,” Berglund said. “You have to look at this as a sign that semen, as along with a number of other body fluids, can contain the virus.”

News Picture: Virus Found in Semen of COVID-19 Survivors – Is It Sexually Transmittable?

The new paper comes on the heels of another study from China that found no traces of coronavirus in 34 men with mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. That study was published in late April in the journal Fertility and Sterility.

Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar with the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Baltimore, said “the fact that the novel coronavirus’ genetic material is found in the semen of male patients is an important finding that will need follow-up study.”

Agreeing with the need for further research is Dr. Greg Poland, director of the Vaccine Research Group at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

“To me, it raises a warning, and now we have to attend to that warning and do the research,” Poland said.

But both Adalja and Poland have doubts about the potential for COVID-19 to be sexually transmitted.

“We know the virus is transmitted efficiently through the respiratory route and we have not seen any documented cases of sexual transmission, therefore this may not necessarily represent proof of sexual transmissibility via the male genital tract,” Adalja said.

That being said, there is more we do not know than know, and we need to heed on the side of caution.

Poland noted that the new study relies on testing that only detects traces of genetic material from the coronavirus.

“It doesn’t tell you that it’s whole, viable, infectious virus,” Poland said. “If I ground up the virus and performed this test, it would be positive even though that virus has no infectious potential.”

Even so, the World Health Organization, in February 2020 advised that everyone sleep in their own bedrooms, and abstain from sex.

COVID 19 – ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

COVID 19 -ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

Covid 19 is a genetically man made virus.  This is like no other epidemic or pandemic that we have had to deal with.  You can not compare this to the spanish flu, or the Irish flu, or the Ziti virus.

Thankfullly, do to the mass number of autopsy’s done we have learned much about it.  This virus attaches itself to 4 main components.

  1.  Your clothes or cloth items.
  2. Hair
  3. Plastic
  4. Metal

  1.   Lets start with cloth items.   If you have gone outside you home, immediately upon coming home, take them off, and put them in a bag to wash.  Yes, many people have a changing routine in their garages.  This way you are not bringing that virus into your home.  Then take an immediate shower with soap .  Nice foaming soap.   Your clothes need to be washed in HOT water settings.  So wear clothes that can handle that.  Leave your shoes outside!

2.    If you have gone to the store, or anywhere with other people, then it is a good chance you have the virus on your hair.   So, you came home and you took a shower.  GREAT!  But that is not all you have to do.    You can not sleep on the same sheets and pillow cases you did the night before.  You must change them daily, and put the used ones in a black garbage bag and tie it at the top until you get them in the wash.  Please set your washer to HOT water.   Dont forget a new towel daily, and get the old one out of the bathroom.

Also, it is not advisable to sleep in the same room with another person.  I dont care how clean you think you two are, it is not safe.

Never sleep in a room with a child in it.

Lets talk about all that hair on your face.    It you have a beard or mustache, then that virus is attached.   If you wish to keep that beard and mustache, you will need to wash it every two hours with foaming soap.    This is a respiratory virus, and that virus is attached to your mustache and beard right under your nose and your mouth.

Ladies:  You too have hair on your face, I dont care if you are 20 or 70 years old.  Take a clean razor and shave your face.  Shaving dry is fine.   Did you know, that the good make-up artist shaves a womans face before apply foundation.

3,  Plastic – The biggest culprit are your credit and debit cards.  You hand them to a clerk, or that fast food cashier, and now they are infected.  If the clerk is wearing gloves, it is to protect them, not you.    Plastic pens.  TV remotes.   Plastic cups from fast food places or gas stations.  Glasses on your face need to be cleaned often.   Dont drink out of plastic water bottles, pour the water into a glass.   Are you getting the idea?   Watch what you touch that is plastic- like keyboards.

4.  Metal – You may have heard of handrails and doorknobs need to be cleaned often.   Often is every 2 – 3 hours.     It takes about two hours for this virus to “attach”.    It is very important to clean and disinfect your house as often as you can.   If you can spray the surface and let it air dry that is the best.   Rubbing it with a cloth is just spreading the virus from one surface to another.

What do you use to disinfect?

There are only two things that work to kill this virus.

Ultra-violet light and bleach.    No, Lysol will not work.  It kills bacteria, and this is not a bacteria.  While we are on this subject, do not use those anti-bacterial gels.   This is not a bacterial infection, or a virus cause by an anerobic germ.   Anti-bacterial chemicals will get into your liver and never come out.  Yes, they will eventually kill your liver.

You can make your own bleach solution.  1 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water.

If you live in a warm climate, hang those clothes outside, and get in the sun yourself.   Any amount of sun will make your immune system stronger in all of this.

To enhance your system take 550 units of D3 and 500 units of magnesium.   DO NOT TAKE if you have any gastrointestional problems.   Even if you are prone to diarrhea, do not take.

Enough for one day!

“High-risk” Diamond Princess cruise ship passengers sent to NEBRASKA for quarantine – what could possibly go wrong?

“High-risk” Diamond Princess cruise ship passengers sent to NEBRASKA for quarantine – what could possibly go wrong?

Image: “High-risk” Diamond Princess cruise ship passengers sent to NEBRASKA for quarantine – what could possibly go wrong?

The infamous Diamond Princess cruise ship that we previously reported had at least 61 confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19) aboard has finally evacuated some of its “high-risk” passengers, but to a place you might not expect: Nebraska.

According to reports, 13 of the ship’s most “high-risk patients,” along with their spouses, have been sent to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for evaluation. And one of them, disturbingly, was specifically sent to a special containment unit due to symptoms of an undisclosed chronic condition, according to Shelly Schwedhelm, head of Nebraska Medicine’s emergency department.

All 13 of these individuals have been tested, officials say, and like all the rest of the evacuees they will now have to remain in a federal quarantine for 14 days. Meanwhile, Schwedhelm says officials are trying to determine whether or not these 13 will be allowed out of their rooms or be forced to stay there at all times.

While some 300 people have now been evacuated from this particular cruise ship, many hundreds more are still on board as it sits out in the water near Japan under mandatory quarantine. The United Kingdom (UK), which has 74 of its nationals still on board, is considering an evacuation of its own to bring these people under appropriate care.

“We sympathize with all those caught up in this extremely difficult situation,” a UK spokesman told the media. “We are urgently considering all options to guarantee the health and safety of the British people on board the Diamond Princess, in line with the latest advice from the Chief Medical Officer and the World Health Organization, and are working closely with the Japanese authorities and our international partners.”

The latest data shows that there are now more than 1,000 cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19) outside of China, with new cases appearing to grow exponentially in some areas.

Iran, for instance, has reported two confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19), both of which resulted in death. This means that, at least in Iran at the current number, there’s a 100 percent death rate from the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19).

Once confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), this will raise the official death toll from the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19) outside of China to seven. It remains unclear if these two Iranian deaths occurred in Chinese nationals or Iranian nationals.

The official death count in China is still around 2,000, though as we’ve been reporting that figure is likely a gross underestimate. With China now bringing in mobile incinerator units to handle all of the dead bodies, there’s simply no way that only 2,000 people there have died from the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19).

Meanwhile, Japan has allowed some 500 passengers to disembark from the aforementioned Diamond Princess cruise ship, leaving behind about 2,000 passengers who have yet to be allowed back into their homelands.

“We need to find the best way to have a safe Olympics,” stated Japanese virologist Dr. Hitoshi Oshitani at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. Japan, as you may know, is scheduled to host the Tokyo Games this upcoming July.

“Right now, we don’t have an effective strategy,” he added. But by the end of July, we may be in a different situation.”

Reports indicate that an upcoming public birthday celebration for Japanese royal leader Naruhito, which was scheduled to take place on February 23, has been canceled due to the Wuhan coronavirus (CoVid-19).
